I recently acquired a 1989 firebird for my 16th birthday. The car was free and all I was told it needed was an alternator. So...I bought the alternator and my uncle and I put it in. Well then I learned it must have a timing problem or something else becaus I can start it up and it Idels fine until I put it in gear. I have replaced the plugs and wires and there was no change.

Another problem is something keeps killin the battery. While I was checking the fuses I noticed a tumbler thing with a key in it. I have no clue what it is but if I d/c it the car won't start. If anyone knows what it is I would really like to know.(the key doesn't turn all the way to a start mode)

At least you didn't pay too much for the car. You seem to be describing some sort of aftermarket alarm or cut-out switch, which may be causing some of your charging problems.

As for the problem with idle, you'll need to provide a bit more information. What engine and fuel system do you have?
