identifying engine?
identifying engine?
The 91 Firebird formula I am buying(haven't got it home yet)was suppose to have the engine replaced last year with a used engine and I asked if it was a 305 or 350....she said 350(car just says formula on the doors so I thought 305)that rose my curiousity and I asked what did they pull the engine from and she said a 95 trans-am. That would make it an LT1..right? How can I identify the engine as such and what all would have to have been done to make it work? Thanks

Something to keep in mind, a 91 formula will only have "Formula" on the side... None of the 91/92's came with "Formula 350" on the side...

an LT1 will be really easy to spot in a older 'bird, instead of having a turd port injection setup it will have an lt1 intake which looks nothing like a tpi setup, it will also have optispark, which looks like a dist in front of the intake instead of a distributor in back of the intake. To see what an LT1 intake looks like go to www.LT1intake.com
Thanks guys. What would I need to look for as the eighth digit in the vin to identify this car as a 350 car? I did not know that about the 91-92 formulas only having formula on the door. Also would it have been possible to use the 91 intake(tuned port injection and bolt it to the heads of the 95 lt1? I thought the heads changed. Thanks

If the engine has been replaced, the VIN won't tell you what they put in there.
Look at the block casting number, located on the back of the block, behind the driver's side head, on top of the bell housing flange. I know, it's one of the easiest to get to spots in the whole car, right out in plain sight and all that. Yeah right.
Anyway, get the casting number, and post it, or look it up a www.mortec.com/castnum.htm The casting number does not lie, it will tell you with absolute certainty whether it's a 350 or a 305, since it's impossible to make the one into the other.
Here's a pic of what it looks like, in the top half of the pic.
