How do I check timing on my 82 305H?

I want to check the timing on my 305H, but for 82-83 the book says that the timing is fixed and no adjustments can be made. I am courious what degree to set the dist. to create a baseline. I realize the 4 wire connector to the ecm will have to be disconnected to do this. I am having slight heating that is abnormal, and want to rule out the timing. thanks, anyone!!

Try 6 degrees BTDC at idle after the 4-wire is disconnected.
