master cylinder

ok, i dont know if i have a slow leak somewhere or what but the other day i noticed that my brake pedal was going all the way to the rear of the floor when braking and it was poor braking at that. so, i filled the resavoir in the master cylinder with brake fluid and noticed the compartment closest to the firewall was almost bone dry. I filled it up (maybe over filled) and pumped the brake pedal and it got better. (didnt have time to bleed the brakes, I was on my way to work) and later the next day, i stopped to get gas and I had smoke coming from the hood. it seems like that i have a leak somewhere at the master cylinder and it was leaking down to the exhaust mani and thus causing the smoke. i have yet to see puddles of brake fluid on the ground so does this mean that i am losing the fluid at the M.S. ? has this happened to someone else? where does this thing prone to leak at? any help is appreciated. thanks

I had a leaking Master Cylinder, it was an easy swap. But then 6 months later the resevoir kept getting low. I then changed the resevoir gasket and that fixed the problem.

The master could be leaking down the booster. Remove the 2 hold down bolts on the master (don't disconnect any lines) and lean it foward to look behind it into the booster, if there is any fluid, the master is no good.

Could also be a leak just about anywhere in the hydraulic system of the brakes.

Look at lines, wheel cylinders, etc. Pull the boots on the W/cylinders back and see if fluid comes out.

Just a Note, personally When I detect something awry with My Brakes, I take the Day Off and Fix it.

That And Leaking Gasoline.
