how much will .062 gaskets lower compression in a 355?

what gasket do you have in it now? if it's the standard .039 it won't change very much at all. if you have the .018 shim type gasket you may drop a tenth. at any rate if you want to make a major compression drop you'll need to change heads or pistons.

What about doubling up the head gaskets? I have heard people who support this idea and people who don't. What about a steel shim?

See my other post in response to your same question on a different thread.

With a 4.155 bore, the Fel Pro gasket diameter on the gaskets I'm using are 4.200.

If you read the package, the ccs are usually printed, so you'd subtract the standard .039 or .041 ccs from the ccs of the thicker gasket.

Rule of thumb is 9 ccs equals 1 point on CR. Use the same formula that you use to calculate swept volume, bore x bore, x gasket thickness x .7854 (which will give you cubic inches) x 16.39 (which converts cubic inches to ccs)

4.200 x 4.200 x .062 x .7854 x 16.39. This will get you in the ballpark and will be pretty close; not exact since the .7854 and 16.39 numbers are rounded numbers.

Different compression ratio calculators that you find on the web or that come with some computer simulation programs will differ slightly, but not enough to matter.
