People who have advanced timing....

I have a quick question. I thought the numbers were suppose to be on the dampener (the pulley behind the crank pulley) but I go to shoot the strobe light (timing gun) down there and NO NUMBERS! What the heck? Where are the numbers at so I can check to see what my timing is at?

the mark is on the damper, that you've found. the numbers are on a tab on the timing cover

Ok, I am confused. I have done it on the Fords and they had the numbers ingraved into the dampner and u just shot the timing gun at the dampner and it would show the number that way. Where am I aiming the gun this time? Do I make a mark on the dampner or something and see where on the timing cover to which number the mark shows up at? I am confused.

There will be a groove engraved on the dampner. I usually fill this groove with "white-out" (yeah, the office stuff) or you can use anything white. It helps the mark show up better w/ the timing light.

The "tab" is at the balancers 2 o'clock position and wil have numbers on it. The tab has notches cut into it, like a saw blade. The BIG valley is 0* then the peak of the first "tooth" is 2* then the next valley is 4* and so on.

Did you mean that as a joke?

You simply "paint" the groove and ONLY the groove, they way when you point the timing light at the timing tab, the groove on the balancer will show up better. If I confused you, don't paint the groove.

Oh Oh, I get it. ok. And then when it is standing still from me aiming it with the strobe light I measure where it is on those notches on the timing cover?

LOL! Someone else that uses white-out besides me.

91- Well, you shouldn't worry about the white out going round and round since it generally "freezes" under the timing light, hopefully around the 6-8* notch. Just paint the groove on the dampener, find the timing tab GMTech mentioned, disconnect your ESC bypass, clamp the timing light lead around the #1 plug wire and the alligator clips to the battery leads, start the car, point at the "tab" and click! If you're like me, drink more Pabst Blue Ribbon and watch the flashing light for awhile. Kinda like a mouse on your computer but much more fun .

91Bird, you have a 305tbi, you will have to piont the timing light and look behined the water pump to find the timing mark. Belive me this stinks but what can you do but live with it.

Hope this helps.

not sure about the 91 cars but, most of the 88 with stock motors have the tab at the 2 clock position to the right of the water pump.

Jethro,

I'm sure I'd get accused of using Never-Seeze.

Don't forget to bypass the EST by disconnecting the single wire connector at the firewall.

The only way to get my timing is looking in between the water pump and engine block also. It's an 89 TBI (used to be anyway). Just my .02
