My car's hard to start
My car's hard to start
When i turn the key it takes a while to start, i have to give it some gas too and it still takes several seconds. Probably 4-8 seconds. It's a Fuel Injection (Multi-Port) and yet I have to give it some gas. Before I got it it had been sitting for a while, (a couple of months) without being driven and I just gave it an oil change, changed the air filters, and gave it some of that fuel injector cleaner. On occasion it will start right away. That's about once in every 5 or 6 times.

I would start out with new plugs and wires. See if that helps since your plugs may be fouled or just have worn electrodes. Check the fuel pressure too and see if it leaks down any, since leaky injectors can make one hard to start. Other than that, how many miles you got on it?

First of all if your car is fuel injected, which it is, you should not pump the accelerator at all when starting the engine. The engine has a computer controlled "Idle Air Control" valve that will regulate the air during start-up and the fuel is controlled by the computer also so pumping the pedal doesn't do anything to get more fuel in the engine to start it.
I used to have the same problem on my GTA but after changing plugs, wires, rotor and cap, and checked the timing, it did a lot better.
To do a fuel pressure check on the 2.8 MPFI is the same as the TPI engines, install a fuel pressure gauge on the Shrader valve located on the fuel rail(it looks like on of the air conditioning fittings), start the engine untill the pressure builds up to normal. With the pressure at normal, shut down the engine and see if the pressure on the gauge drops. If it drops your fuel pressure regulator is bad or your injectors are leaking through.
I do not know what the pressure reading is supposed to be for the 2.8, but you might get that from a local dealer service department.
Good luck,
Ozman

Check the fuel pump. When it doesnt start, you might want to try turning the key to the on position a couple times to prime the pump, if in fact its the pump going out.
