a Couple of carb questions.
a Couple of carb questions.
my camaro has a 305 4bbl.
origionally a V6 car...the previous owner did the v6 --> v8 swap. and i think he may have not hooked up the carb properly.
with the car in park, and me revving it, the 2 big rear barrels of the carb do not open? not matter how much i rev it they don't open...
question 1: should the big barrels open when being revved in park?
question 2: if they actually should be opening, how much of a difference will it make when i fix it?
i understand these may be dumb questions, but i am new to carbs, so any help is apprieciated!

No the "big barrels" won't open just by winging the throttle while in neutral. I'm assuming you're talking about the rear secondary air door on a Qjet carb.
The engine has to be under load at WOT , like when you're driving it.
There is a vacuum controlled delay diaphram on the right side of the carb that delays the air door from flopping open until the engine needs the extra air flow.
This momentary delay is nessessary to prevent the motor from bogging as the secondaries kick in.
You can check the air door spring tension by opening the air door by hand. You should feel light to moderate resistance as you operate the air door by hand.
If you want to test to see if the secondaries are working while you're driving it, temperairly wire the air door linkage shut so it won't open and go for a ride.
Find a book in your local Libary thats all about Q jet carbs.... The author is Doug Roe.
read it , know it......
There will be a test.........
