transmission mount help, PLEASE
I think that i possibly have a broken tranny mount. under hard exceleration in first gear it sounds as though somthing is trying to rip out from beneath the consoul. If anyone can confirm this for me please do ! i hear it is a common problem with these cars. i got underneath it earlyer and looked. i was able to push up on the drive shaft with just my hand and move the tranny pan up and the back of the transmission. There is a cross-brace of some sorts right before the u-joint. There is an item bolted in the middle which i would assume to be the tranny mount, i can get the tranny to sepereate from this just with my hand ! If this is indeed the case how would one go about replacing it ?? must you jack up the transmission and do it like that, or would you remove that cross bar ???? please give all the advice you can !!! thank you in advance !!!

PS. i am not a mechanic, but i was able to put a new fuel pump in the tank without cutting a hole in the back, hopefully this is easier

Yes that is the trans mount.
Yes it sounds like it is broken.
To change it, you unbolt the 2 bolts that hold it to the trans and the one stud that holds it to the crossmember;jack up on the trans; allow the broken pieces to fall out; put the new one in; and put the bolts and nut back in. Not a particularly difficult thing to do, as these things go.
The main advice I can give you, is to use jack stands. Don't get underneath a car that has only a jack supporting it.

I watched a new trans mount being installed in my daily driver Caprice. They used a block of wood under the trans pan, and a portable pneumatic lift under the block of wood, to lift the trans a few inches to get at the mount. He had to remove a large crossmember ( which went just about across the whole car, from left to right). Took about 40 minutes ( a professional mech).
I had to take it back 4 months later because the 2 bolts that go thru the mount up into the trans came loose ( or maybe he never tightened them up enough ! )
Just to tighten these 2 bolts up again took him a good 20 minutes. There's not much room to turn a wrench in there on those 2 trans bolts.
If you can do the pump in the tank, which I hear is a major pita, you should be able to do the trans mount !

It is much easier to do on a camaro then it sounds like it was on your caprice. The crossmember is held in by 4 bolts that are in plain view. You could probably do it in 20 minutes from jacking the car up to driving it again.
