Question on rear end 82 Z28
Question on rear end 82 Z28
hey again, On my 82Z I was looking to get a posi unit, this is my question, what carrier do I have? I found one I like but it says it has to be a series 3 carrier, so how the heck do I know what mine is? will that work? my car is the 82 Z28 5.0 Litre FI. everything on the rear end is stock, so also if you could tell me what tranny I have also, thanks alot guys, I really need to know if that will fit.. im always open to performance or addon parts for my car, so if you have anything let me know, thanks

Nate P,
Check the RPO codes for your car. There should be a decal located in the center console or at the compartment in the rear cargo well. Your differential will probably be one of the 'G' or 'M' codes. Check the codes against the PRO decoder in the Tech Section of this site to determine what axle you have. There is also a steel tag on the right rear axle tube which should have a three-character alpha code. Find this code and we can find your axle ratio and type.

IIRC the cross-fire cars came with 3.23 gears. So, a 3 series posi will go in there. However, you need to watch out for the axle spline count; starting in 88 or 89, they went from 26 spline axles to 28, so depending on what year carrier it is, your axles might or might not fit it. Of course you could always swap out the axles too; but chances are you'll have to buy a whole rear to get them.

Hmmm, thanks for posting, the car it came out of is below, this is the description on it..
This is a series 3 posi unit that came out of an 88 IROC-Z. It will fit any 82-01 Camaro Firebird series 3 carrier. This unit was taken out of the car at approx. 50k miles and had a set of 3.23 gears attached.
So do you think it will work in my 82? how will i know? what do you think i should pay for something like that? its in good shape, so let me know if it will work, thanks again guys.

This is a brand-new takeoff from a 4th gen Z28 being converted to a SS... so I guess they go down from there, as far as used OEM units. HP ones such as the Auburn Pro or Zexel-Torsen HD are a different matter, they go for $300ish new. The SLP only fits the 28 spline axle.
88 was the changeover year for the splines; alot of 88s had the old style, but not nearly all. With that year above all others you have to count them. So there's absolutely no other way to be sure whether that one would have fit your car or not.

If you have a G92 car, you will have the 3.23's and posi already-I think. 2.93's are the standard gear ratio with the injected 305. If you have a manual tranny you have to have the 3.23's. But I guessing you have an auto. Look for the G92 code. Or better yet, pull the cover and check the gear ratio and see if you have posi(probably worn out). If you don't have posi, slip a powertrax locker in that carrier. All you remove is the spider gears. It's a fairly easy mod and you don't have to worry about replacing the gears, bearings, axles, etc.. if you install an slp unit. However, the powertrax requires an open(non-posi) carrier. So if you have a worn out posi you will need an open carrier to install the powertrax. First thing you need to do is figure out for sure what you have in that differential. Then you will know what you need for sure.

88camero, what is the powertrax? I plan on buying another rearend but, if this whould just go in an open one than I might just get a v6 one with the steeper ratio and install that. right now I have a new gm limited slip with my 3.23's stock. just new. any ways is it some sort of locker or what? limited slip kinda sucks and is in my opinion a really cheep posi that only works under moderat power.
Okay this is kinda related, sorry but I figured that some one might know. Okay 82Z with the LG4. No clue what tranny thinking might be a turbo 350 but I don't know for sure. Motor is not the stock one just to let ya know. So any how. I will be going down the free way at 60 and I'm doing 2,750. 65 and I'm hitting three grand. WTF is this a 373 here or? I'm sorry but I have never used a old school non OD tranny. Any ideas?

If it's a non-OD trans like a 350 or a 200 (which IIRC is what it would have if it is still the OE one) then with a 3.08 and typical tires, the speed will be almost exactly double the hundreds of Rs in high gear: i.e., 3000 RPM = 60 MPH. So, if you're at 2750 and 60 MPH, that would point to about 2.73 gears.

At 60 mph with 3.73 gears, 245/50r16 tires, th350/th200 tranny, you will be at 3000 rpm. I had the above combo for a few years.(overdrive dropped the rpm to 2150 at 60mph)
2.73's with 245/50r16 tires will run 2150 at 60mph
3.08's with 215/65R15 tires will run 2400 at 60mph.
3.08's with 245/50r16 tires will run 2450 at 60mph.
3.42's with 245/50r16 tires will run 2700 at 60
Spyder, I would guess(depending on tire size) you have 3.42's

Powertrax is a streetable locker. I can't say enough good things about. Great traction, extremely strong, and easy to install. FYI, Posi is GM's name for limited slip.

When you disassemble the rear end, lay the 26-spline axles to one side; when you reassemble it, slide in 28-spline ones. Asuming that you already have a 28-spline carrier, no other modifications are necessary except that it would make good sense to put new axle bearings and seals in when you replace the axles.

You have 26 spline axles and carrier right now. If you go with a powertrax locker(very streetable), all you need is the locker, about 45min to an hour of time, and maybe a friend to help.
