info on starters

I have an 86' iroc, and the other day went to start it and the starter was just clicking and not cranking. The battery was recently replaced but hooked up the charger anyway to give a little extra boost, but no good. Jacked up the car and the starter was locked and not engaging the ring gear. Tried to free it up but didn't work. Ordered a new high torque starter, and was wondering if any one had some tips on instaling it since it seems it's gonna be a knuckle buster. The car is in a garage, so it will be on jackstands.
Thanks in advance for any help..

I know that most of the time, the ypipe has to be taken down, but beyond that it is pretty simple. Unhook wires, unbolt it, bolt-in new one, and rehook wires. Be sure to read the instructions in the package regarding shimming.

Shouldn't be too hard of a job. Like said make sure to read the instructions about shimming etc. Good luck.

Thanks for input, starter when in with no trouble. Didn't have to take off y-pipe. Just snaked it through.

I've never had to remove one to get the starter out.... not even in my L69 car, with the big Y-pipe. Not with the stock Y-pipe, not with the Edlebrock TES one, not with a SLP one. Turn the starter the right way, it drops right out and pushes right back up in.

A little brain power (problem solving skills) goes a long way.

You know what dude, i dont know if you are following me around posting on mine or what, but i can assure you that sometimes you DO have to take the ypipe down, its not just a matter of brainpower, its a matter of physics. IF the starter wont fit through, you need to take the ypipe down, believe it or not, it happens. Hey i posted in the transmission section too, go post a reply there so we can argue about that.

Not really interested in arguing with people, but rather in helping them out ..... I just hate seeing wrong stuff get posted. After all, people come here to get the real deal, not some kind of run-off-at-the-mouth guesswork. They can do that themselves, or get as much as they can handle at the McDonalds parking lot on Saturday night, without even coming here. This place is for de-bunking the stuff they heard last weekend, when it's time to cut through the BS and get down to reality.

If you want to think that stuff and do extra work and all that, go right ahead, just don't bring it around here. It doesn't really help anybody, it just confuses people who are coming here trying to find out the straight scoop. I feel sorry for some relatively inexperienced person that trusts what you told that guy, and breaks off a manifold stud needlessly while trying to undo his exhaust when he doesn't really have to, for example.

#1, I NEVER told anyone to take off thier ypipe, I said you may have to, because i have had to. Depends on the brand, the oil pan, and the starter.

#2 I have never offered run-off-the-mouth guesswork, I simply offered the advice on how to do it, and warned what may need to be done

#3 Nothing I posted was wrong. I am glad that you didnt have to take your ypipe down. Doesnt mean that you are right, or I am wrong.

#4 Personally I think that you are wrong a lot more than you think. Hell, you jacked an entire thread and started an argument about a th350 a while back for no reason. Hate to tell you this, but your experience isnt the end all, know all.

Go ahead and show me what part of what I posted belongs in the McDonalds parking lot, or where I told anyone to do anything that doesnt need to be done
As a matter of fact here is exactly what I said.

"I know that most of the time, the ypipe has to be taken down, but beyond that it is pretty simple. Unhook wires, unbolt it, bolt-in new one, and rehook wires. Be sure to read the instructions in the package regarding shimming."

If you are looking for a pick and **** match, go somewhere else I dont have the time for it, but dont talk trash on me man.

Do the starters on the one-piece rear main blocks need shimming? I've never come across that issue until I put in an old style two-piece rear main block in my Iroc.

Never had to shim a starter on my 87. It's always good to measure, though. You never know how it was manufactured.

Never had to drop my y-pipe to install a starter either, can agree with that. Although with the stock y-pipe it took a bit of work to get the starter oriented correctly to come out.
