idling problem need HELP!!!!!

ok i have a 1987 GTA. When i come to a red light sometimes the car will stall or rpms will drop real low then catch and go back to normal or just stay that low. Today it wouldn't idle when i started it, and the check engine light came on, code 34 mass air, i have a new maf sensor. Then i waited a little and it idled fine and the check engine light went off. Any ideas?

I had a similar problem once and it turned out to be the mass air flow relay. I replaced it and never had the problem again.

Thanks for the help, i heard there was 2 relays for the Mass air, is that true? Also where are the relays located and if there is two what one should be changed? Thanks

I believe the V6's had one and the 8's had two. You apparently can try to swap them and if you get another Code (Code 33 I think ) you know the rely is bad.

Remember, the code 34 can also be thrown by a vacuum leak. I had a hose the a small rodent had chewed threw. Maybe it was the hamster powered my sport coupe

The V8 F-bodies did indeed have two MAF relays. One is the MAF power relay, the other is the MAF burn-off relay (this is the one that supplies power to heat the wire inside the MAF to burn away any contaminants when you turn the ignition off). They are located on the driver's side firewall, next to the master cylinder. Vader has a pic of the lay-out posted (a few times actually!), so you can see the exact locations, and determine which is which. Search prior threads for "code 34" or MAF and you should be able to find it easily. Good Luck.
