Easiest way to change the timing chain?

In relation to the timing cover, what's the best/easiest way to get it done hopefully without dropping the oil pan? I've heard of trimming the cover where it meets the pan but I'm unsure of this. If anyone has pics of this please post them along with any tips or hints for this.
Thanks
