First time head gasket replacement

Oh, boy, where do I start... I have read the service manual and started taking the plenum off last night... I have several questions hopefully you guys can help me with.. I want to do this with the engine in the car.

1. How do I set the #1 Cylander to TDC?
2. Taking out the distributor absolutely scares me.. What do I need to know about before I do this??
3. Reccomend new gaskets.. I am only doing this ONCE and would rather get good stuff then have to go through this EVER again.
4. Do I have to remove the AC lines from the compressor, or can I just unbolt and move outta the way (I live in Florida and next to sunscreen, this is second on the list of must have's)
5. Any idea what a rough estimate to have a qualified mechanic do the job?? (need to justify the carpooling with the wife while I do this and take the time to clean everything!!)
6. Do I need to remove valves and valvesprings or can that stuff stay there and just remove the rocker arms and pushrods??
7. How do I lash the rocker arms when I am finished??

Ok, that is all for now... Thanks for any insight anyone can give.

1 pull the plug and have someone bump engine over till you feel the compression
2 not really
3 fel pro
4 no on the removal, yes on move it out of the way
5 too much, call a shop in your area and ask for a quote
6 no leave the springs on the head, remove rockers and push rods
7 measure from the top of the stud to top of the nut with depth rod on dial caliper and reinstall them to same number. be very close if not exact and need no more adjustment. if you need to adjust them do a search here and you'll find a lot of therads on it

This isnt from an F body board, but it is in fact a very good guide on how to set your valve lash easily.
