305 rebuild...how to get started
305 rebuild...how to get started
Okay, I recently got an entire 305 engine complete from q-jet carb to oil pan from an 85 iroc (LG4). I have an 86 ta with the same engine which is about to go south. I want to rebuild this engine myself and I have some experience (but no expert). I want to keep it stock (I know everyone will yell performance but I am ok with how the current engine takes care of me). General questions to all you engine rebuilding experts:
1) As I take it apart, any special problem signs to look for?
2) Any special books recommended for the 305 rebuild process?
3) Anything that needs replacing right off the bat? car had 95K original miles.
Thanks for any and all help...I am in no hurry, I just want to do it right....
Thanks alot.

What engine are you taking apart? if you are taking apart the engine that will eventually end up in your car, i would strip it bare and inspect every last inch of it. It would also probably be benificial to take it in and have it checked and machined if needed.
If the crankshaft has developed any form of surface rust, i would take care of that, as well. Investing in a Summit rebuild kit or equivalent would be a good idea. Get the bearings that match the crankshaft (if the crank had to be ground, get the proper size. Same thing with overboring)
I guess from here, it really depends on what parts you want to reuse and what parts to wish to replace.

Suggestion: Put the '85 engine in the car as-is. Get it running.
Then rebuild the '86 engine. If you really want to rebuild one, that is. It's a slightly better engine than the '85 (but only slightly, I suppose).
Better idea would be to put the '85 engine in the car as-is, then go get a builder 350.
