It was suggested by the sales person who I am buying a Hypertech thermo master from to have both thermo fans wired to cut in at a lower temperature (as well as run a 160* thermostat)

Is this really required ? (to wire the thermofans to cut in earlier)

yea thats the whole point of it, cooler tstat,fans turn on earlier=cooler running car

 

To run the Thermo-Master you do need the 160 T-stat and the 176-on/166-off fan switch which are both made by Hypertech. If you have a dual fan set-up the chip is set to control one of the fans and the other will be controlled by the fan switch and the AC pressure sensor. So you should not have to do any rewiring. Just replace the parts and you are ready to go.
Remember that the chip will also change the fuel/air ratio, timing advance, and the tranny's shift points (by 1-2 mph) and TCC lock-up. Hypertech recommends running 92 octane or "the highest available octane rating"
