Checking/Adjusting the Timing

Ok I just got back from Pep Boys with my new induction timing light. I read the manual, but still have no idea how to use it! I haven't seen anyone do this before (and of course never done it myself!!) Can someone tell me, step by step, what the heck I need to do to check the timing, then adjust it?

each car may be differant on what you have to do, but basically you'll have to unplug the vacuum advance, or unplug a harness to the advance, or spark control. buy a manual for your car and it'll be covered in more detail, or tell us what kind of car you have. clamp the inductive pick up on the #1 wire as near to the plug as you can, some/all of the pick ups are directional, so check you instructions ofr this. connect the power and ground wires per the instructions. start the car, point the light at the timing tab ,again check manual for you car for location and specs. pull the trigger on the light and read the tining marks, to adjust loosen the distributor clamp and move the distributor.

Whoops, forgot to mention what car I was talking about!! :-O It's an '88 Trans Am GTA. I checked my owners manual but it didn't mention where the timing tab was. Do you know where it is? Also, how do I know which way/how much to move the distributor?
