Timing gremlin

Well, my car runs (finaly). It idles rough, and driving is damn near impossible. It feels like it's not firing all 8, but all 8 header tubes are very hot after I run the car for a bit. When it is sitting in park around 1K RPM, it seems fairly smooth, drop down to 650 and it gets very choppy. Get up to 2500 area and it shakes the car.

I have tried adjusting the timing while it idles to see where it likes it, but nothing seems to work when you try to drive. Reving also is very choppy.

Not as much black smoke as before, but still a bit of white on the passenger side bank of cyl.
Any ideas? Plug wires?

hard to guess not knowing what you've done, or changed. check for spark at all the wires. have good plugs? good base line tune up? check the injectors, check the injector harness with a noid light. no codes? that would make me think tune up or fuel delivery

No codes, because I can't read them (burnt bulb, non-working ALDL). Have had lots of trouble. Motor is a 4bolt main 396 stroker small block, w/ an 89 TPI system on top, DFI (not accel). The computer doesn't really do much. DUI distributor.
The car was running before, and it just quit running. I've replaced the ignition module, coil, and plugs (again). Have it running, but it is very rough. Also have changed out the CTS. The car runs worse w/ the PCV valve pluged into the vac line, I disconnected it for the time being (PCV is in a billet breather cap, can't find one to fit in there at the parts store). 42-45 psi of fuel pressure, holds steady. Noid light shows injectors are picking up. Onlything I can think of is either timing is still an issue, or the plug wires are old and shot (I think its leaking from the boots). It idles a bit rough, but it idles and all cylinders fire. It gets very rough/vibrates hard at 2500, yet clears up fine in the uper RPM band (3500, 4K). It drives, but it lacks all power what so ever, bucking and spitting at me when I try to go (but it did WOT just fine and layed down lots of rubber in 2nd...trying to get up a hill). I don't hear it arcing, or didn't see it at night, but that doesn't prove anything.

Not smoking anymore at idle from the drivers side bank of cylinders, but a bit of white from the passenger side. When it is givin throttle, it puffs a bit of white and black out (not blue).

What is stock timing for a 350 IROC? I will get it back to close to stock (I guess I need to find TDC) and then go from there. It can be off much, or it wouldn't even idle like this.

Any suggestions are welcome.
