Once they go, they are gone for good. Not worth the effort to try repairing, the cheap plastic parts just wore out and there are no replacement.

usually what happens is the plastic gears in side the odometer break or get knocked off there mounting stud or you had a spring break .....i have a gmc pickup that did the same thing and when i took it apart i had a broken spring and a gear completely off its stud that turns the dial i tried to fix it and to no avail you might just want to look at swappin gauge pods ...nows a good time to get a 145 mph speedo!!!!!...

i already have the 145 mph speedo electric...its a 91 Z. anyways, i dont want anything aftermarket so which would be cheaper/better, just getting it fixed or buying an entire new guage cluster?

Just writing your mileage on a piece of paper when you fill up with gas. Thats the cheapest method and may be your only option. That trip odometer is not that important to spend big bucks on. Mine hasn't worked for six years now, gave up trying to fix after the first months. I bet, fifty percent of the 3rd gen car out there have a non-working trip odometer, so join the club.

They're really easy to swap out (at least on a firebird cluster).. It may be the little motor that turns them has burnt out, or the gears are just stuck... I'd take it apart and get a look see, no reason to just give up...
