serious stalling problem plz read!!!

first off i should mention this started about 3 weeks ago. it did it a couple times on the highway. then ran fine until tonight. i was on the highway again doing about 70 when the motor started to hesitate pretty badly and eventually shut off while i heard loud popping noises coming from under the car. loud enough to make another driver pull over thinking he blew a tire. i pull to the side of the road. starts up fine. i give it a couple high revs in park and neutral without problems. i put it in gear and get on the highway again. problem starts again when i get to highway speed. i pull over and let it sit for about 45 minutes. start it up again and drives fine for about 15 miles. im still on the highway and the problem starts again. engine hesitates, stalls and loud popping sounds. but this time it does it while in park/neutral. i rev and when i get to about 1500 RPMs it quits. i had to drive the rest of the way home doing about 10 mph and keeping the RPMs at about 1000. if i gave it too much gas it would quit. so it kept on shutting off and i kept starting it up countless times the rest of the way. seems to me like a fuel problem but am not sure. the pump is less than a year old. the 2 things i noticed are that both times the problem started i was on the highway, and the car had been running for some time. also i checked under the hood and nothing seems out of place.

TIA!!

Have your ignition module checked ..may be getting hot and shorting out. Mine did the same thing.

changed the ignition module 4 days ago. seemes to have cured the problem. hasnt done it since.

but my muffler is literally somewhat crushed in the middle. i was told this is b/c of raw gas not being ignited and going down the exhaust and exploding inside the muffler, causing the loud banging. this true?? car seems to lack a lil power now but am guessing it's cuz of the restriction in the muffler now.
