EGR Question

Hi everyone,
I replaced the EGR valve on my 86 ta 4bl about 500 miles ago because I kept getting a code 53. After replacement with a napa brand, it ran great with no ses codes after that. Now 500 miles later the light is back on. Could it be the valve is defective? car has 117K original miles............

Thanks

Did you clean out the passages that bring exhaust gas up to it?

They plug up with schmutz over time; when that happens, no EGR action occurs, even if the valve itself works right.

Thanks for the reply. Yes I did do that and then started the car without egr and it blew all this crap out. Then put the new one on. I am thinking it is defective valve just wondering how common that is....
