A/C Question

Question for all the A/C experts. the AC in my 86 ta blow hot air. Now I know the logic of what all the parts do but I am trying to figure out how to start troubleshooting. When I turn the ac on, the clutc on the compressor does not spin. Now I know it won't spin if their isn't enough refrigerant. How involved is it to convert this to r134a? Can I just get one of those goofy kits for $30 that does the conversion and see if it works? or is there much more to it?

any advice would be helpful...thanks...

The conversion kit for $30 usually just replaces the fittings and a few seals. They work alright.

If your system truely is low on refrigerent it had to go somewhere. Refrigerant isnt a consumable fluid. Youd have to find the leak and replace the accumulater to be safe.

A proper retrofit also requires a change of the expansion control and installation of barrier type hoses, and should include an evacuation and oil recharge.

If your car is an 86 you shouldn't need new hoses. Most cars after 85 came with barrier style hoses already installed.

My '86 T/A didn't. Standard swaged fittings, no seals.
