Irratic Oil Pressure?

I've got a 91 RS with a 383, but it started life as a 305 TBI. The Gauge is reading irratic oil pressue, drops to virtually 0, then spikes up to 40, then to 60, back to zero, and it seems to do this regardless of how far I've got the throttle open.

...now, I'm not buyin' its the motor doing this, mainly because there are none of the signs of a motor with oil pressue issues, including a hot motor, odd noise, or signs of stress.

Are there known issues with the Oil Pressure Sending units or gauges in these cars? The rest of the gauges are working fine in the cluster.

Thanks!

The sending units on these vehicles are notorious for going bad.

If you are unsure of the oil pressure ever, you can hook up a mechanical gauge to verify.

Sounds to me like a bad hookup. Not sure how the oil preasure guage gets its reading...if its an inline valve or an electrical sensor. Either or...I would check the hookup.

Does the SES Light come on at all?

probably just another bad sending unit, extremely common.. its located at the very rear of the intake where it meets the block in the china wall on the drivers side, looks like a little can with an electrical hookup on it..

It could also be just above the oil filter.
