Aftermarket Air Condition

What is the best air condition unit (compressor) i can buy for my 87 Iroc? I want something that performas at least as good as stock, for an 88-92 since i will be convertin to serpentine, and one that looks real trick (polished). I need to replace my compressor since it is whining like a b itch, so i figure this is the perfect time. thanks.

Checked the oil charge lately? That new compressor might not last very long without oil, and the old one may last indefinitely with the correct amount added.

Are you certain the compressor is at fault and not the clutch?

I'd suggest a Harrison R4 compressor, polished or chromed if you prefer. It will easily work as well as a stock compressor.

How would i know if it is the clutch? I know when i turn it on, at about 1000 rpm in moans and groans... the moaning goes away if i sping the motor faster than 1k. Also, where would i check the oil charge?

The moaning is real typical for cars with that belt system (I'm assuming you have one ribbed flat belt, and a V-belt for the A/C). It doesn't indicate that there's anything wrong.

Are all the brackets and bolts there? That's usually what makes it do that.... the whole assembly kind of flopping around out there in space.

But it only moans at about 1K. The moaning is more like a vibrating... sounds like bad bearings. I put the belt on really loose to make sure that i don't seize up the bearing. Did i screw up??

Yup, that's what they do. Between about 800 and 1100 RPM. Tightening the belt doesn't really help, because the actual problem is tha tthe compressor isn't held to the engine very well.

You're probably missing a bracket or a bolt.

There's probably nothing wrong with your A/C itself if it blows cold.
