Stuck bolt

Well, I WAS going to remove my smog pump today, but the bottom bolt is stuck. Whoever decided to use those torx (or whatever) bolts in a car was crazy. Ive had more problems with those things... I tried vice grips, but the area is too small without removing the hoses and sway bar. Its now still stuck, and stripped - probally permantly. Any suggestions? Thanks, Doug

you can take off the large metal bracket that holds the smog pump and a/c (at least on my 89) - there are two torx bolts right near the lower rad hose by the water pump that need to be removed. There's a couple more as well, just don't strip any more. I'm thinking this should enable you to lift out the whole thing and work on the stuck bolt out of the car. Unless that bolt you stripped IS one of the bolts that mounts the bracket. But i seem to remember when I did it that I couldn't find all the air pump bolts at first so I took off the big bracket anyway, so you should be ok. Once it's out, try vice grips or a torch, etc.

i had a friend that we stripped a few on his camaro. We took all the bolts out except the stripped one and used the whole bracket as a rachet to break it loose and the vise grips to get it the rest of the way out. Also you could cut a slot in it with a dremel tool and use a large flathead bit to get it out.

What are the odds that it is permantly fused in? It is really stuck in there, but shows no sign of rust. What are the bolts made of? Hopefully its not an aluminum/iron reaction.

Bullfrawg had a good suggestion. You can also grind the head off or drill it out if you have room. If you know someone who's good with a welder, weld a hex nut to the head of the Torx and hit it with a breaker bar, or weld a piece of steel bar to the head to break it loose and then cut the bar off.

Any way you decide to get it out, use lots of penetrating oil like Yield and rap it a couple times with a hammer to help break it free. Heat may help too (i.e. propane torch or butane torch)

hammer a 12 point socket onto the head of it. Always works for me.

When I was installing the performer intake, I stripped the last bolt on the old intake, while it was still on the car. We were using a 9/16 wrench, so we got a 14mm and pounded it onto the bold. Didn't slip and came right out.
