Could this be a starter problem?

Car ran fine a couple days ago...went out to start the car and all it make is a ticking noise. I thought the battery was dead so i tried to boost and just got the ticking noise. Motor isn't even attempting to turn over.

If this is the starter can i only get to it from underneath the car? and where exactly is it located? Should i be able to tap the starter to get the car to turn over?

Thanks for the help

J

Sounds like the starter selanoid. Rapping it with a hammer might get it started. Ultimately you will need to replace the starter.

It is located on the passenger side just to the rear of where the passenger would put there feet. Get under and look up past the exhaust pipe and ou should see it.

How big were these jumper cables?

I sell em, and the cheapy $10 ones won't even jump a cavalier.

Take the battery out first and take it to a local auto parts store. They can test it and see if it's bad or good.

Then, once you have a KNOWN good battery in your car, you can work from there.

I'm a manager for Advance Auto, and have seen WAY too many people throw money at their cars because it won't start, and people automatically think it's the starter. Most of the time, it's a dead battery.

Hope this helps!!

I tried to boost the car with the Motomaster Eliminator-made sure it was fully charged. This is how i previously boost the car when the battery ran low. I'll make sure to check the battery but even if that battery was shot the car should have still tried to turn over when i tried to boost it right?
