My car is throwing a code 34 & 36 intermittantly. While the SES light is on the idle is rough and acceleration is very "jittery". See sig for car specs.

34 - Low voltage at mass air flow sensor
36 - Burn off at mass air flow sensor OR
Problem in transmission shift OR
Fault in direct ignition system OR
Missing pulses in electronic spark
timing signal.

code 34 indicates that the ECM has seen no air flow signal (low voltage) on ckt 998 (pin B11 at ECM) while running or during the transition between engine running and not running (burn off period).

according to my manual "by disconnecting the sensor and starting the engine, it will determine if the air meter caused the ECM to see the low voltage. if a code 34 repeats, then the wiring or ECM is at fault."

however, since you also have a code 36 i would think its safe to say you have a bad mass air flow sensor.

make sure your tps is adjusted properly, if not that will throw a code 34.

and replace your maf burnoff relay for code 36,
also make sure your connections are not corroded and if they are clean them..
chances are you wont need a new maf.

 

To expand on the above mentioned tip, try the following....
1. clear the codes (disconnect the battery for 30 seconds)
2. start the car, and see if it throws a "34"
3. clear the code(s) again
4. disconnect the wiring harness plug from the MAF
5. start the car, & see if it throws a "34" or "36"
6. if it throws a "36", this indicates a faulty MAF, so replace the sensor ($ ouch)
7. if it still throws a "34", switch the MAF power relay, and the MAF burnoff relay (on the firewall, next to the brake booster)
***note*** these relays go out on such a frequent basis, it's scary!
8. If this doesn't remedy the "34", check the wiring between the MAF sensor and the relays, then to the ECM
9. Check to ensure there are no vacuum leaks in EGR, PCV, throttle body, plenum, runners, base, rocker covers, and the air ducting and bellows leading to the throttle body.
10. Finally, as mentioned above, check and adjust if necessary, the TPS voltage (about .53-.58V @ idle, 4.6-4.8@ WOT)

This is usually the fault of the relays, and GM has issued a service bulletin on the topic. The good news is they are cheap ($11.99 at my local parts store!), and extremely easy to swap. Let us know if this works, or if the problem persists...

I cleared all of the codes. Now the car is only throwing a code 36. I thought about replacing the Burnoff Relay. Any suggestions??

This is extremily similar to what just happend to me! My car just started throwing code 36, and ONLY code 36. I know the contacts on my MAF burn off relay are a worn and corroded so I need to replace the connector, and then the relay itself. If the MAF is bad them I'm pretty much screwed for now. Can't afford a new MAF.

 

Confirm all the MAF connections. Replace the burn off relay, and confirm the relay connections. Clear your error codes and try it again.

If you're not getting a '33' or '34', you likely don't have a MAF problem.

 

My car just started throwing a code 36 as well. I cleared the codes and checked them agian and the only trouble code is 36. Where exactly is the MAF sensor burnoff relay? I've looked in my manual but I can't seem to find any info on it.
