Can cam bearings be replaced?

Okay my friend and I are restoring a 66 Mustang, but it came with a 302 in it. Its not a roller cam or block. We pulled the engine today, and after fashioning a cam puller out of a harmonic balancer puller, we pulled the cam out. That sucker did NOT want to come out. We found out why, too. The cam bearings are scarred up like hell, like it was run hot, or with no oil. they are not spun, but they have redges on the back edges of them, like the cam walked forward. the engien has been rebuilt at least once, because the pistons have .030 stamped on them. Anyways, can we trade this block for a rebuilt one and get the core charge on it? Or can we pay a machine shop to replce them? We would like to get a fresh rebuilt block since this one needs to be rebuilt anyways. Also, should there be just a tiny bit of play between the connecting rods on the crank? You can move the rods back and forth on the journals a few thousands of an inch. Please help, we dont know if we need a whole new block or what.

any machine shop can change your cam bearings for about 25 dollars, plus parts.

ede is right about the cost of cam bearing replacement, with the right tool (I have one) it takes less than 10 minutes. The bearings themselves are less than $15.

Yes there should be side clearance on the rods. .010"-.020" would be what I'd look for. Basically you want some, but not too much. It's not a really critical measurement.
