Odd Problem

I have a mani leak, was really loud went for a trip to block buster on my way home noticed, it noticably quieted and also there is a wierd sound that is erratic but not too loud nore too offten, also lack of power and seems the 4 barrels didn't kick in? (Is it possible if the manifold can seal itself if it got hot, found that there is very little oil the radi has really dirty water, suggestions, not liking this and it is very wierd for the engine to quiet down like this!!!

Thank You

I have seen it happen. My Dad's 1959 Ford has an L-6 in it that when it was started cold, would squeel. It turned out to be the intake gasket for the #2 cylinder and when it warmed up it would quit. No big deal to him because it didn't have a water passage to worry about and he was going to pull the motor and drop in a V8 shortly after he bought it back in 1980.

#2 still leaks and the 289 is still sitting beside the car waiting to go in.

I went to a garage today and they told me that the exauhst manifold gasket could have gone, there is no squeel on my engine (luckily) but the sudden quietness of the manifold shocked me

exhaust manifold leaks dont usually squeel, they tick....a squeel is either a vacuum leak or a belt.

[b]...Found that there is very little oil the radi has really dirty water...
Fill the crankcase with the correct oil ASAP, then drain the cooling system refill with water. Tun the engien until it is fully warmed, then drain and refill again and add a cleaner. Run it until hot again, following the instruction on the cleaner container. When finished, fill with a lower conecentration of antifreeze since you may be draining again soon if you discover inatke leakage.

Or, you can run it with no cooling and no oil and replace the engine, solving all your problems. Rypically, a heating intake won't seal itself permanently, and will leak and potentially cause damage when it cools. Filling a chamber with coolant or dumping antifreeze into your oil are short paths to failed engines.

Also check the bolts at the base of the carburator and make sure they are tight. They have a tendency to come loose and cause vacuum leaks there.

LOL as much as I would love to blow the 305< i can't, no cash to buy a replacement. I don't beleive there is any sign of oil deposits in the water or water deposits on the dipstick of the oil. The water has more of a rusty look then oily, more like a ugly brown. maybe there was a prob with the carb, well everytime I go to start it, it is really rough and won't stay running long unless I tap the gas lightly a couple of times and then it smoothins out and then runs fine, I thought it may have just been a lazy o2 sensor... but I thought the o2 shouldn't work untill it started to warm up, this is just as I start it, but like I said afterwords it is only rough when starting and rougher durring winter to start, not driving but starting. the "coughing" sounds like the "Exaust" manifold I don't know how to describe it, except that is sounds like my exaust but... more in a "coughing" manner now.

sounds like not enough fuel is getting to it......or not enough spark...or the timing may be way off...

Hmm, I thought fuel getting into the carb may have been the problem with the carb, but if it was the the timing, don't you think that it would drive rough as well? and I think it sparking find, I haven't heard any arking or any skipping while driving or starting....

im just saying, generally, theres a ticking noise when you have an exhaust manifold leak.....

and slight ignition problems can appear to be ok and run and not be too rough.....

i.e. switching the #5 and #7 wires accidently....still runs...just...no power lol

heh thanks, I know I did that (switched wires) by accident with my v6 before it became a lemon, heh but that didn't kill it, it was just on its way out and the body and interior wasn't worth saving, but anyways thanks. there is a rattle that sounds like ti comes from that area, nothing bad and it doesn't go with accel but anyways, thanks again
