will i have any problems without smog pump?
will i have any problems without smog pump?
or air pump. whichever it is. the dang thing froze up today and burned the belt off. just wondering if it will screw with my computer and give me problems. seems to running ok now. had me scared when all the smoke poured out of my hood but that was just the belt. oh, its a 87 iroc. tpi. thanks
I suggest removing it if you live where they don't do emissions testing. I removed my smog pump, hoses, air tubes, Cat. & etc. I know it helped my car sound and run better. Run: less drag on the belt(Crank & etc.) removed some weight(not much but every bit helps). Sound: besides it running around in circles it goes straight out the back. Also if you don't delete the air pump or replace it I've heard that it will cause the Cat. to clog up faster than it normally would because it's not circulating but just sitting there.

I'm planning on doing this myself. The only issue is your emissions. If you can get by without them then go for it. However, if you run the car a lot with the pump off the cat will most definitely clog up! If you are going to dissconnect them you should go ahead and either clean out or take off your cat. My emmissions in NY are pretty tough so I am not going to take out the assembly I am merely going to take the belt off, cap the three AIR tubes and gut the cat. This way when inspection time comes I can uncap the tubes and swap in the clean cat and pass. To my knowledge you will not have any computer troubles either. Good luck.

I removed belt only last summer during the drag season for with/without comparisons (BTW, it made absolutely zip difference in ET). I intented to put the belt back on the following Monday for commuting, but the pump had already frozen up.
I've been running it that way ever since. Absolutely no problems with computer or anything, but I'm due for emissions testing this fall - it'll be functioning again by then.

sounds great guys! thanks! i was just gonna run it until i could get a new one in a few weeks but might as well just gut the cat and cap the lines off. dont have emissions stuff locally. just in the big cities like philly so i might be able to get away with it.
I passed the sniffer up here with No AIR installed anyway....

The AIR pump will seize really rapidly if Not used.
If it Does, its easy to open it up, Spin it a bit by hand and shoot some lithium grease in there to get it Moving again.
The Cat will Clog Without it Installed As well, So if you plan On removing it permanatly, remove that too.
