I could get 25 to 30 in my old 2.8 mpfi. I had a good rebuild and had the idle set at 550rpm. The gear combo in it would let me get to 70 mph just before I got to 2000rpm. it would get to 2700 rpm if you went above 80 and got way up there if you went any faster. Cruise control helped on the highways. My low idle and flowmaster series muffler made the weenie v6 sound like a go-kart with a big cam

Probably trying to prevent people from topping off their cars and emitting gas vapors into the atmosphere...

Either that or the gas stations used it to charge more for the service...

:werd:

can you imagine the first day on the job as a pump jockey? seriously the training would consist of "this is a gas pump, these are the different grades; now to dispense the gas, you pull this here lever on the handle" :lala:

Believe it or not, but I've been through Oregon a hundred times and each time I got gas, they topped me off.

Also, even with the full service, gas prices in Oregon are still cheaper than in California.

I think the law has something to do with gas being a hazardous material and they don't want soccer moms and yuppies to accidentally blow up the state.

Actually the story I heard was Leon Hess who created Hess gas stations had alot to do with it. At this time Hess gas stations were known for their full service being exceptional amongst most gas stations and were very popular for this while still selling their gas cheaper. At this time gas stations felt to compete with Hess they would provide self service stations and be able to charge less than Hess. Well this didnt sit well with Hess and he had very close relations with New Jersey state officials at the time. So since Hess at the time had very good ties with the state officials he was able to make the full service law be instated in New Jersey. This is how I heard it from some old folks so dont take it to be fact but it sounded ike a pretty good explanation to me.
