Reading Service Engine Codes

Ok, I understand the whole..stick a wire in the troubleshooting port in the car, but how do you read the code itself? I understand the beginning sequence of flashes, but when light flashes the actual code, what does it mean? I received 3 short flashes, then a pause, then 4 more flashes, pause, 3 short, so on and so forth before the beginning sequence flashed again. So how do I read those flashes to figure out what is wrong with the engine.....Thanks

First set of flashes will be the number twelve. One short flash and then two short flashes. It should do that 3 times. The 3 short flashes with a pause and then 4 short flashes means number 34. Code 34. It will then keep flashing until there are no more codes and just repeat itself. 2 short flashes and then pause with 5 short flashes would be 25 and so on...
