70's 350, pops but no go... coil???
I have a motor for my 86 'maro from a 74 Nova (engine might be older, late 60's early 70's) and I can't get it to run!
It's been sitting for 4 years... and I just want to hear it run before I clean it up to permanently reside in my car.
It has an Edelbrock intake, Holley carb, and an electric fuel pump that I rigged to a jerry-jug.
When I spray some starting fluid into the carb and turn it over, it just spins and spins. Sometimes I will get a good pop from the exhaust with black smoke, but that's it.
Any ideas? I'm not going to run it much before I tear it down, just enough to hear if it knocks or anything.

Well, the plugs don't look to have been used much, if at all, but they are Bosch Platinums
I'm going to get a new cap, rotor, and coil for it. It has a coil-in-cap one with vaccuum advance... that's not original, is it?

Wait, it is original to the Camaro, but I don't think the Nova. The motor seems to be from the early 70's, late 60's.

The coil in cap HEI distributor started coming in cars in 74. What are the casting numbers on the block? How about engine code on the front passenger side of the block on the deck surface pad right in front of the passenger head. If that makes sense.

I'm going to go out on a limb here, and guess that the distributor has been out of the motor since it last ran....
Am I right?
It's no longer lined up with the correct cylinder. Find #1 firing (not just #1 TDC) and put the dist back in the right place.

I'm working on getting some #'s from the engine, all I can tell you now is that it has the oil filler tube on the front center of the intake.
The distributor is in there, and tightened, so I'm not sure if it is off or not... guess it wouldn't hurt to check!
What's the easiest way to do that?
