Spun Bearing question

Recently my friend offered to sell me his 89 iroc 350 fully loaded for $1500, only problem is that it has a spun bearing and won't run. What will it take to fix this? I know i will have to rebuild the bottom end of the engine, but i heard that a spun bearing will ruin the block, is that true? If so do you think this car is worth $1500? Thanks for the help.

It depends on how much the block is hurt. The extent of the damage depends on how long it ran like that, and alot of other factors. You won't know until it's apart.

A spun bearing and it wont run? Sounds like alot more than a spun bearing to me. Figure on replacing the engine, anywhere from cheap at 1000, to expensive at 4000+ depending on what exactly you wanna do with it.

Sorry, i should have been more specific. It won't run because the battery is dead, i have heard it run before and it knocks pretty bad. What i really want to know was what all will need replacing. I was thinking about a complete rebuild kit, and if the block was bad i know where i can find a good one pretty cheap. I was thinking that all of the above should have the car in running condition, but feel free to correct me if i'm wrong. Thanks for the help.

spun bearing will trash the main or rod it's on. you might get by with replacing a rod or you might need a block. you ought to figure on the worse and hope for the best.

Depends on what bearing is spun. If its a rod bearing, then usually that means a new rod and maybe a new crank, although sometimes it can be ground down... that depends on how badly its damaged. You are looking at about 25 bucks for a rod, and around 100 for a crank grind or 150ish for a good core. If the block is damaged, thats about 2-300 for a good core. And then while you are doing all that work, its a good idea to rebuild it. A decent rebuild will cost no less than $1000 because of all the parts and work involved.
