Black crap on cam bearings

I've got some black sludgy crap on cam bearings on a motor I have on the stand.

I don't want to remove the crank + rods to replace all the bearings.

What could i use to clean the black crap off of them? I was thinking brake cleaner, but I don't know if it will ruin the bearings.

Yeah, that'll work fine but.... where did that sludgy crap come from is the more important question.

Crap oil? I scrapped about a pound of the hardened crap out of the lifter valley. Threw out the pan.

'88 350 roller block out of a blazer.

That means it's still in the oil galleys. And now that you've "disturbed it" the chances of it starting to come off and trash the bearings is actually higher than if you had left it alone.

I think you better bite the bullet and get this thing tanked.

Hrmm.. It ran and had good oil pressure.

I took it out of a blazer to put in my boat. TBI motor. I threw the heads and everything out. Right now it's just a short block.

I really don't want to hot tank it and rebuild it. I'd rather find another short block somewhere that is ready to go.
