readjusting idle
readjusting idle
Well, I tried readjusting my IAC and could never get to adjust because car would not stay on. I tried following instructions on the tech article on how readjust your IAC idle and is not working or what am I'm doing wrong. Now car won't idle correctly and shut off on me. need help. thanks.
88,
If you're adjusting the IAC, you're doing somthing wrong. The IAC has no adjustments, and is controlled by the ECM directly. In order to set minimum throttle position, you need to adjust the idle stop screw on the throttle body. If the car will not idle sufficiently to allow this adjustment, make sure the engine is at full operating temperature and try adjusting the throttle position very high, then back off the throttle stop screw slowly to get the correct idle speed. You may have to adjust the TPS more than once during this procedure, and again after the final minimum air position is set.
If someone has tried to adjust the minimum air in an attempt to increase idle speed, you're going to have to start from scratch and it may take several adjustments of the throttle screw and TPS to get set correctly, since they are interdependent. Aslo, if the throttle body and/or throttle plate shaft is worn or sticky, correct adjustment may be difficult or impossible.

Hi Vader, I finally got the idle adjusted I think! when I tried it again the idling barely wanted to stay running and I had to screw in the adjusting screw about a full turn from its original position, does this sound right. Is this what happens when you readjust the idle, it would now seem like the throttle plates are more open then usual. Like I said i was able to adjust the idle and then readjust the TPS to .54, but do you think its alright. car seems to be running O.K. Thanks
88,
If the IAC is clean and working properly, the TPS is set at 0.54VDC, and everything is running right, what else could you ask for? Sounds good to me.
However, if you've had to make a major adjustment to the throttle position to maintain a warm idle speed, something else might have changed. It's possible the PCV is not flowing as it should, or the EGR is sticking open a bit, or the TPS may have slipped position, or the IAC is getting dirty/plugged or sticky. If you haven't serviced teh system in a while, those might be things to check. If everything is cool, don't worry.
