Oil Pressure
Oil Pressure
Hey everyone I have two questions in one. The first is why is it when I first drive my car the oil gauge is where it should be and when I accelerate the gauge rises like it should, but after driving for a while when i'm at idle it drops in the red? But then as soon as i accelerate it rises like it should. Second question is why when i start my car does it idle at 1500 rpm but as soon as i put it in gear it idles at 700, but if i throw it in park or in neutral it goes right back to 1500? Any help is greatly appreciated.

First question... The oil viscosity changes as the oil warms up. Imagine bacon greese in a pan. It liquifies and gets thinner when you warm it up.
The reason your idle drops is that the engine is under load when you drop it into gear. 1500 is a little high. Mine is around 1000 and 750 in drive.

Your oil pump is just getting old.
According to the book your oil pressure at operating temp 180-? should be 40 at 2000rpm.
If you want to have some fun install a melling high volume pump and the oil pressure will be pegged
As for as idle that is controlled by the computer its sounds like its close so dont worry about it unless its jerking really bad when you put it in gear.

Pressure is bad... volume is good. A good rule of thumb is 10psi for every 1000rpm. That actually can be a little lower on street cars.
