HUGE backfire through intake
hey, i was hoping somebody would have some idea as to what is happening to my car. I fired it up the other day, after having it sit for about a year and it ran fine, no popping or baning through intake or exhaust ran smooth, pulled proper vacuum and everything, timing is right, everything is in proper working condition or so it appears but it only happens when i hammer the gas, if im idling and i push the gas smoothly it revs up fine, but if i hammer on it, there is just a HUGE "POP" and fireball that shoots up the intake. it doesn't make sense, how could that be when it runs so damn sweet all the rest of the time.
hope somebody has heard of this before, by the way, it is a carburated car, 355, hei distributor, vortec heads and edlebrock intake, any help would be appreciated thanks boys

For one reason or another, it is lean when you go WOT. Either accelerator pump, or a problem with the secondary fuel delivery.
Can we assume it didn't do this before going into storage?

no it didn't do that before it went into storage, actually it was doing some other wierd stuff, cutting out at like 3500 rpm under hard excel but never fireballing the air cleaner... i was having some electrical problems with the distributor and was going to sort them out but when i fired it up yesterday i got the pop through the intake and then instant shut off, the car starts back up fine and runs fine again but give it WOT quickly and it pops and shuts off.

Sounds like an Edelbrock carb problem. I have had a lot of experience with these, and just finished with a problem in the carb section. I would say that your accelerator pump is not giving it enough fuel fo that one of your primary boosters is clogged, or the air bleed on the boosters. I would rev the engine slowly while looking into the carb with the aircleaner off(be careful not to put your face over it) and try to see if gas is coming out of both of the boosters evenly. It may help to remove the choke flap junk. If that is fine, make sure thelink to the pump is on the hole closest to the carb body. i would also double check the timing. i never could get a good WOT rev just sitting there in my car when I had a 750 edelbrock. Mine would never pop, but it would struggle for a second, then kick on. I have a 600 edel now and it sucks hard on the ventruri and is crisper than most fuel injected cars I know. Greatly improved my throttle response. If you have a friend who has a 600 that you can borrow it and see if that helps your problem.
If all else fails, just pull your carb and clean it with carb/choke cleaner, inside and out, it is very easy to do. the worst that will happen is it will run better. Pm me if you need more help.
