6* degrees is what the timing is suppose to be at. To check the timing disconnect the single tan wire w/black stripe on the passenger side firewall. This will prevent the computer from advancing the timing therefore giving an incorrect reading.

6 is stock, you will probably find that 8 will work better on that engine. 12 is too much if the cam is stock, it will go slower.

well i knew it was somewhere around there. i bought my car wrecked and my dad repainted it and i put it back together(1200 bux for a 32,000mile 86 IROC ain't a bad deal). i had to replace the core support and the hood so i don't have the stickers anymore. thanks for the help guys i'll try 6-8 degrees and see what happens.

I Like the Technical Answer mad

" It will Go Slower"

Timing is really dependant on the Engine and what mods are done to it, The octane fuel you plan to run, the density of the air at your altitidue, and about 5000 other differnt things.

6-8* is a good starting point, move it around from there and see what works best For you.
