Disconnect battery after installing headers/exhaust???

I've heard people talking before that after doing any major mod that you are supposed to disconnect the battery to reset the computer or something. Can anyone enlighten me on this? Will doing this hurt the computer in any way? How long to leave battery disconnected, what to do afterwards, etc. Thanks!
