Just put the freshened up 305 back in my 87 TA today and when it is idleing without the airfilter, MAF, or other tubing, it seems to run pretty well. BUT, when I put all that stuff on it really lopes and dies. I really don't even know where to begin. The block has been bored 30 over, it has 22# injectors,
1.6 roller rockers, .440 lift cam, gear drive timing set, shortie headers, and a few other things. I have my fuel press set at 46psi. I do have the stock chip. I really didn't think that would make a difference just yet. Any help would be great. Thanks

BS,
The ECM has not been initialized if the engine was running without a MAF. Reconnect everything, then clear the ECM (disconnect the battery or ECM fuse for about five-ten minutes). Restart and allow the engine to reach closed-loop mode, then drive it normally for about twenty minutes to expose the ECM to all ranges of sensor inputs. This will cause the ECM to write new fuel tables for closed loop operation.

vader, is there anything else that I should look at. Still early in the game, I still don't have my timing set correctly yet. What do you recommend for that? Thanks

VADER- arent yoy supposed to run it a WOT a few times to. Basically let it see the whole range of operation?

I am a little leary of running it a WOT right now. It just got rebuilt and I would feel a lot better if it were broke in before it saw WOT. Don't get me wrong, it will see it in the future and quite often too.

At the very least, its running rich. Try dropping the fuel pressure, and make sure your timing is set correctly.<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Originally posted by bsnoke:

Madmax, what fuel pressure do you suggest?

I'd start somewhere near the stock settings on the fuel pressure and timing, then start working your way up after it breaks in a little. I think 40 psi on the fuel, and about 8 - 10* on the timing would be a good starting point. Get other opinions first, I haven't dealt with aftermarket setups all that much, mainly just stockers.
Anyway, Good luck!

ok, i've asked this in a couple of other threads and no one has seemed to answer. i've got an 86 TPI w/ computer controlled HEI. just replaced the wires, plugs, rotor and dist cap... now i need to set timing again. how exactly do i go about doing this... disconnect sensor wire, then...? I know the distributor can be turned on other setups, but how do i go about doing that on my car?
