Distributor tuning...
Distributor tuning...
If I turn the distributor clockwise, am I advancing the timing or retarding it?
I'm getting a little hesitation around 1200 to 1800 rpm. The cars pulls strong but only past 3000rpm. Before the distributor swap, it would pull hard from 2500. Should I turn it a little clockwise or counterclockwise...or get it timed properly with a gun...but, what do I set it to? 8*?, 6*. 6 is stock for my 89 TPI as far as I remember..it says under the hood. Also, I don't have the tab on my timing chain cover anymore ever since I changed my chain and sprockets. Will I still be able to time it with a gun if I don't have this tab?
Thanks,

Clockwise retards.
Without the timing tab, a gun is even more useless than usual. Don't worry about it; set the timing to where it runs the best. If you have a scanner, the best way to set it, would be to advance it until the kock counts start to increase under heavy acceleration, then back it slightly off.

So how much should I turn the distributor counterclockwise in order to advance it a bit. I think I may be running a little on the 'retarded' side. If I move it about an inch of travel, about how many degrees would this be?
Just to be sure, I just loosen the hold down bolt and turn the distributor unit correct? (meaning, the cam gear doesn't move at all)
Thanks for the input

If you move the distributor counter-clockwise an inch, you'll change the timing a ton. You only need a very small movement.
You also need to invest in a timing light; the way you're approaching this is just shooting in the dark. $35 AutoZone

So I just turn the distributor (about a quarter inch) counter-clockwise to raise the timing. Cool, I'll try it later.
I guess when the car doesn't pull as well I can go one step back clockwise?
How do you know when it starts to knock?
