305 / 350
305 / 350
besides the obvious
what are the differences between the 305 and 350 what are the dis/advantages of a 305 over a 350 and vice versa eg a 305 is I'd guess easier to find and 350 is more powerful (but is it noticable?)

I'd say that you've picked a tricky question to answer. Basically the only difference is more low end torque with the 350ci, if the 2 engines have the same power....
For example my 1979 350ci engine had the same power as the 1985 305 L69 that my car came with.
However I would say that what the 350 gives you is more options. You can mod a 305 like crazy but you'll run into a limit where you may want to bore it out etc. At which point you'll wish you'd started with a 350.
Whats your plans for the engine? IS it a one of purchse, never to be modded, or more of a starting point for many years of upgrades?

as far as parts interchange all SBC parts will swap from one to another, except for a few internal parts like crank and pistons due to the engine size and balance. there was a change in 87 to the one piece crank seal that made flywheels and cranks differant from earlier years. the 305 will limit you preformance wise because of the small bore and the limits it places on heads that would optomize preformance and since an engine is an air pump you're limited in the amount of air you can move in and back out.
what is your real question or what is it you're wanting to do?

well I've had the modded route (in the process of trying to sell my 383 at the moment) and in terms of doing more to a future car not really looking at doing too much, headers, remove cat (UK based so legal to do so :lala: ) and a pretty much free flow system... other than that the only other thing I can think of may be to slap on a set of 'Vette heads (for which I would need the 350)...
not overly interested in the performance aspect, up to a point (otherwise I'd just go for the V6
and that will not happen!!!
)
I guess that the 350 has a little more 'saleability' (with an eye on eventual resale)
