Fast chip came in mail today. Says i have to use 160 stat Y?

I have a 180 in my car now and dont feel like changing it to a 160 + I have emissions here and it gets cold sometimes. Will I be safe with a 180?

I don't know if it will be safe with the 180*, I haven't done any work with the chips. The reason it says to use a cooler stat is because the chip advances the timing and that causes the car to run hotter.

Mkos1980 I have the fastchip in my car for a couple of years now with a 160 stat. But was thinking of going up to a 180. My car seems to run very cold gauge does not get above 150 but then gauge might not be accurate. I need to get scan tool to get accurate reading I think. Will be checking to see what you find out.

Almost ALL aftermarket chips have a more aggressive fuel/spark curve and will most definitely make your car run hotter and that is why it is recommended to run the 160 degree thermostat!! B'sides if you put in the 160 and it's running TOO cool for you then you can put the 180 back in!! I'm running a 160 with my stock chip and it runs just right temperature wise....I can only imagine what will happen when I get my aftermarket chip!!

when do your fans come on? aftermarket chips can also change when the fans are supposed to come on. if the fan is set to come on at 165 degrees, that is kinda worthless if the stat don't open till 180. see my point?

IT REALLY DEPENDS ON WHAT TYPR OF DRIVING YOUR DOING. I DID RUN A 180 THERMO FOR A WHILE LAST SUMMER BUT I DID 99% HIGHWAY DRIVING BUT WHEN I HAD TO DRIVE IT EVERYDAY IN CITY TRAFFIC I WENT BACK TO A 160 B/C THE CAR HEATERED UP SO FAST. OF COURSE THERE IS ALSO HYPERTECHS FAN SWITCHS TO HELP WITH COOLING AS WELL. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM.

Soon to come .SLP Posi 323 rear end , Spohn LCA's and panhard bar , Ascd ram air hood, Z28 spoiler and grille , white guage faces.

The reason you MUST use a 160* T-stat with the Fastchip is because they set the fan on/off temperature around that temp. Comes on around 176* and off 168* if IIIRC (been awhile since I checked out the Fastchip BIN).

So if you put a 180* T-stat in, your fans will never turn off.

The spark has nothing to do with the needing a 160* T-stat; its strictly what Ed set the fans at. I have a FAR MORE AGRESSIVE spark curve than the Fastchip and I run a 180* T-stat.

Okie, so once again I was corrected! My bad! Thanks for the info tho' because I have an adjustable fan switch hooked up so when the fan kicks on and off is no longer controlled by the ECM but rather with an adjustable switch containing a heat probe that's connected to the radiator!!

86, I make mistakes all the time too (along with forgetting things). It's tough keeping up with all the differences between the various years/engines/induction systems.

MKOS, you might be able to give Ed a call and ask him to burn if for a higher temp if you want. It's a simple change to do to the eprom.

I put a 180 degree thermostat in my car for the winter, because the 160 takes all day to make heat. Doesn't seem to have any real adverse affects. Actually, I'm gonna out the 160 degree one back in this week because its getting warmer outside.

86TpiTransAm, is that what that one-wire sensor is that sticks out of the driver's side of my radiator's side tank? I got the radiator from a junkyard '88 Camaro (rad looks brand new), and my '86 never had that piece.

I always wondered if it was a sensor, and if it was, how the heck it got a ground. It's in a plastic tank, after all. ??
