Air cleaner
Air cleaner
I am planning on taking the original air cleaner off my 87 firebird formula and replace it with an open air cleaner-3"x14"- for the summer. Is it alright to take the crankcase vent tube out, and put some tape over the hole in the head cover??
87,
You really should provide a source of fresh filtered air for the crankcase vent. The PCV system will not operate correctly without a supply of air to the crankcase. A non-functional PCV will contribute to sludge formation and shorten the life of the oil.

Get a 'breather filter' it's round and sticks in place of the tube and relieves pressure to the head like the stock version did. Advance Auto sells it for $3-4

Or if you don't even want to spend that little bit of money you can just leave the stock one the way it is. The plastic piece that holds the breather filter is only held in the air filter by a metal clip that can be easily removed with a screwdriver.
