hard start on new motor??

Hey guys I just helped my buddy put the GM 330 horse crate in his truck, he has a performer intake on it and a 670 street avenger, now when he goes to start the damn thing the starter almost can;t turn the motor then finally it will roll over and start, Now we have messed with his timing from 8 degrees to 12 degrees with no change, Hes got long tubes on the truck but its a brand new starter and it has a brand new heat sheild wraped around it, Is there anythign else that can cause this cause I'm lost. thanks

do what ede said.

also verify that your TDC mark is accurate. because timing that is too far advanced will cause that problem.

if all else fails, buy a stronger starter.

You say "new" starter? But what is the actual starter? Is it a high-torque with gear reduction? Or is it a factory reman'd one?

its a stock reman for an 89 firebird with a 305, the same one I have on my car and i have more compression and alot more cam and mine cranks liek a stock car.. I dunno what is going on, it seems the timing isn;t doing anything..

more cam makes it easier to crank over(less dynamic compression)

but the problem sounds like the weak stock starter.
