AIR pump delete...belt or pulley?

OK, putting the engine back together and was wondering which was cheaper.

about $45 for GMpartsdirect delete pulley (so I can use my stock belt) or a new belt. If I remember, serpentine belts are not cheap.

I kinda like the idea of the delete pulley, although I know several of you do without it.

I didn't use either, I just took it off. Why are you interested in a a/c delete pully if you don't really need it?

He is considering the smog pump not AC. A serpentine blet is much cheaper than the delete pulley. We are talking 19 bucks vs over 50 by the time shipping costs are added in. If you do not run AIR than get rid of the pump. If not, it will seize.

I want to A/C delete but i know one of the belts running the A/C also runs the power steering. But the power steering has 2 belts. Will it run just fine without the other belt or does it need it?

Here's the delete pulley in place. Sure, there's a cheaper way to lose the AIR pump, but I think this looks better.

oops, my bad, im waiting for my new glasses. So its possible to run a serpentine without the air pump and a/c? Would you need a new drive pulley and tensioner, that you would have to buy to run serpentine?

Well, it's only about $42 and change for the AIR pump delete pulley. GMpartsdirect runs out of Winston Salem which is about 20 minutes from me.

$20 bucks for a new belt?

......I may pay the extra $20 or so, just for looks. The bracket is just sitting there, and to a fellow car guy, it's noticeable that there's something missing.

.....I'm still undecided...

....it's not the "exact" same pulley as the AC delete is it?

...from the pic, it looks pretty similar.

nope, it's not the same. The air pump delete pulley comes up as a water pump pulley for some reason. They are much different though.

It might just be me but i figure the more fargin' pullys you have the harder that motor is going to have to work to turn them all. I'd just assume have something "missing" and have a bit more power.

Sure it doesn't take much to turn that pulley but that belt looks awfully long and in the long run i think you're loosing power.

I might be wrong but less is more...in more ways than one.

The power loss of a delete pulley is minimal at best, an I doubt it's even measurable. It's not a factor. As for appearance, I would agree fewer pulleys look better, but if you're still running the factory accessorie brackets, no pulley leaves an empty space, that IMHO looks worse.

...as for not running either pulley, there is no way to tension the belt, unless other changes are made. You can do a search for "belt routing" and find a thread I made about a year ago. That has a lot of cool info in it.

I'm doing this setup on my car. I've heard of a bunch of other people that did it with great success. The new belt from napa is only 22.95. I'm doing the ultra schnazzy or whatever it is that gets rid of both ac and smog.

Here is what your set-up would look like if you do not have a smog pump or the delete pully. If you go with the AC delete pulley your set-up will look the exact same as this but you just won't have a compressor behind the pulley.

thats the setup i want capone do you happen to have the part number for that belt ? as for the horse power loss, running extra pullys, i would only ask do you leave your spare tire in the back when you race ? a little here and a little there addes up no matter how small, its the racers edge to grab every little bit that you can I.M.O. ..... tao

I have only 1 pully short from what the car had from the factory. If and when I go with the AC delete I will buy the necessary pully and put it in place of the AC compressor and re-use the same belt. Nothing will change belt wise or routing. I beleive the part number is Dayco 986K6. I would get it from Advanced Auto. This part number is the worng belt over at Auto Zone.

Here is another pic straight from the tech article

While you statement is technically true, I'd shave my head to save the weight of my hair before I started removing dummy pulleys.

.....but that doesn't mean you can't do it. I understand trying to squeeze out every little edge!
