External electric pump and filter

I'm trying to get a carb-to-TBI conversion to work properly. The TBI "kit" I bought wants 17 PSI, and I can't seem to make that much.

My question is, what is the usual arrangement as far as fuel filters? The parts and instructions I got say to go from the tank to a fuel filter, then to the pump and directly to the TB. I get the impression that it's more standard to go directly from the tank to the pump, then through a high pressure filter to the TB.

Is this true?

On the one hand, it does seem like a good idea to pre-filter to protect the pump from garbage. On the other hand, the filter I have is clear and I can see that it's about half full of air while the pump is running. It seems like the pump could be sucking air which would keep it from working as well.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

It all depends whether or not its an inline pump or an intank pump. If its in the tank, there really is no way to filter it (before the pump) except for a screen that keeps the big crap out. Every car I can think of that has an electric fuel pump is setup that way so I think its pretty safe to use.

Also, it sounds like you are still running a mechanical fuel pump? You'll never make enough fuel pressure with a stock pump. You should change it out with an intank pump like a stock TBI. Hope this helps

I should have been more clear. I have an in-line external fuel pump, no in-tank pump. I removed the mechanical pump. Right now I go straight from the pump to the throttle body.

So what I'd like to know is whether it makes sense to put a low pressure filter before the in-line pump. I want to protect the pump, but I don't want to make it suck air and work less efficiently.

I'm really hoping I don't have to drop the tank and install an in-tank pump.
