How much do the impact beams effect safety?

How big of a role do the front and rear impact beams play in the event of a crash? I am thinking about removing them for weight savings, but I obviously don't want to die in a crash. Would it be crazy to remove them on a daily driver?

For me, these fall under the category of "The factory must have put them there for a reason."
On a street car, if it were MY street car, I would leave anything that is there for safety, well alone.
Is this a car that is a DD but goes to the strip occasionally? If so, I'm sure that weight can be lost elsewhere before the impact beams are tampered with, unless the car is already gutted and you are sitting on a plastic crate.

I wouldn't remove them on anything other then a race car. I removed them on a car and the front weighed 37lbs and I forgot to weigh the rear but I would guess 25-30lbs.
Well, Murphy's Law kicked in 3 days later and my dad backed into the LF of the car when his rear window was foggy. Wrinkled the fender bad and bent the hood latch area up a little.
It's an easy way to kill 60-65 lbs, but I wouldn't on a DD.
