Speedometer and gearing question

My 92 RS has a electrical speedometer, right?
So if I were to buy a new speedometer It would have to be electronic? a electronic one is $199 and a mechanical one is $112. Would it be worth changing it to mechanical and can it be done?
Next question on gearing, if I change from a 3.08 to 3.73 do I need to change the speedo gears? or VSS? Does tire hight play a role in that too?

Thank You,
Dave

1) Why would you want to change the speedo??

2) If you change gears, you will need to re-calibrate the speedo. If the ECM controls the speedo, it will need to be re-calibrated. ( I'm not sure on the early electronic ones, I would call a speedo shop.)

3) Yes.

Maybe I should of worded that different. I want to change out my speedometer to a Auto Meter ultra-lite, they offer a mechanical or electronical one. Which one do I need?

I'm not familliar with the autometer gauges, I would assume that if you have an electronic speedo, I would stick with the electronic autometer.

Would make the swap easier I would think.

Since you have 3.08 gears, I think you have a 5-speed? Keep the electronic speedo, its worth it. For a 5-speed and 3.73 gears, you need a 7 tooth and a 21 tooth speedo gears.
